Past Graduate Students:
Evelyn Nimmo (MA 2003)
Eve completed her undergraduate at the University of Waterloo before coming to SFU to complete an MA with me, on colonial convent excavations in the city of Cuenca. She went on to complete a PhD at the University of Reading with Roberta Gilchrist, on excavations of a colonial convent in Riobamba. She is now a post-doctoral fellow at the Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa, UEPG, Brasil.
Victoria Castillo (MA 2003)
Vicky completed both her BA and MA in SFU Archaeology, with an MA thesis on the ethnoarchaeology of modern potters in Cuenca. She has gone on to a PhD with Raymond LeBlanc in Anthropology at the University of Alberta, and won the William E. Taylor Prize along the way. Vicky is now chair of the School of Liberal Arts at Yukon College. See her work here.
Roland Sawatzky (PhD 2004)
https://manitobamuseum.ca/main/collections-research/meet-our-curators/roland-sawatzky/Roland did his BA in anthropology at the University of Winnipeg, and an MA in West African archaeology with Joanna Casey at the University of South Carolina. His PhD with me at SFU was a study of Mennonite housebarns in Manitoba, and Roland has gone on to become History Curator at the Manitoba Museum. Douglas Ross (PhD 2008)
Doug did his undergrad in archaeology at Wilfrid Laurier University, and an MA with Marley Brown at the College of William and Mary. His PhD under my supervision was an archaeological study of salmon cannery workers on Don and Lion Islands in the Fraser River, BC. Doug completed a Wenner-Gren Postdoc to turn his dissertation into a book with U Florida Press. Doug is now a project manager with Albion Environmental in Santa Cruz, California.
Michael St. Denis (PhD 2008)
Mike did his BA and MA in anthropology at the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed a thesis with Margaret Kennedy on a depression-era relief camp. His SFU PhD was on the excavation of the colonial-era hospital in the city of Riobamba. Mike is now with Parks Canada, he began as Acting Superintendant, Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, moved on to become Visitor Experience Manager for Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay Parks, and is now Manager of National Operations and Sales at Parks Canada in Ottawa.
Gina Michaels (PhD 2009)
Gina did her BA in anthropology at Berkeley and then an MA at Stanford with Barbara Voss. Her PhD at SFU was on concepts of masculinity in the archaeology of two monasteries in colonial Riobamba. Gina is now an anthropology instructor at Cabrillo College in California.
Guy Duke (MA 2010)
Guy completed a BA in archaeology at the University of Calgary, and then for good measure did a second BA in anthropology and Latin American Studies at SFU. His MA with me was on historic-period canals in the Riobamba area, and he went on to complete a PhD in archaeology at the University of Toronto with Ed Swenson. Guy is now a assitant professor at U. Texas - Rio Grande Valley.
Alana Peters (MA 2011)
Alana did her BA in archaeology at SFU, and then an MA with me on the excavation of a purported brothel in a rural area near Vidette Lake, BC. Alana is now the owner/manager of the Cache Creek Husky.
Ian Sellers (MA 2013)
Ian did an undergraduate in anthropology at UBC, and completed his MA on historic material culture in Barkley Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, co-supervised by Al McMillan and I using materials from Al's ongoing research in Barkley Sound. Ianthen had a UNESCO internship in Paris, which made the rest of us jealous. He is now an archaeologist with Inlailawatash.
Jennifer Jones (PhD 2016)
Jen did her BA in Archaeology here at SFU, and then went bicoastal for an MA in Archaeology at Memorial in Newfoundland. Returning to our program for her PhD, a research trip to Australia led to a dissertation with me on the archaeology of tourism at the Port Arthur Historic Sites, part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. Jennifer is now a senior consultant with GML Heritage in Sydney, Australia.
Sarah Lison (MA 2017)
Sarah completed a BA in anthropology at UBC, and went on to work for CoDA at UC Berkeley. She then joined our department for an MA on digital heritage management, which she successfully defended in May 2017. She is now the professional programs secretary for the Faculty of Education at SFU.
Daniela Balanzategui (PhD 2017)
Daniela came to us from Ecuador, where she completed a Licenciatura in archaeology at PUCE in Quito. Daniela then came to SFU and completed both her MA on colonial domestic tablewares from Riobamba, and her PhD on the archaeology of enslaved Africans in the Chota-Mira region of Ecuador. Daniela is now an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts - Boston.
Fernando Astudillo (PhD 2017)
Fernando is an archaeobotanist from Ecuador, and completed his Licenciatura at PUCE in Quito. He went from there to the University of Calgary for an MA with Scott Raymond and Julio Mercader. He came to SFU and completed a PhD on paleoethnobotany from the 19th century El Progreso Hacienda on the Island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos. You can see video of Fernando in action on the Galapagos here. Fernando is now an assistant professor at USFQ Quito.
Sarah Beaulieu (PhD 2019)
Sarah did her BA at UFV, and then came up the mountain to do an MA with Eldon Yellowhorn in our department. She continued her research at the Morrisey First World War Internment Camp near Fernie, BC, funded by the CFWWIRF. Hey look - she made the front page of the Vancouver Sun. And here she is in a cool video about the Morrisey cemetery. Sarah is currently a sessional instructor at UFV.
